Why Do Lawyers Rarely Offer Free Legal Advice?

Nearly everyone could use some legal advice at some point in their life. It doesn’t even have to be a very serious situation for some legal advice to be wished for. Sometimes it could be something as simple as a tax question. However, when we want some legal advice, we always would like to get it for free. This is why so many people want free legal advice and wonder why lawyers often do not give out this advice for free.
The money factor
The most obvious factor involved in the reason why lawyers often do not hand out free advice is the fact that this would be a money losing proposition. They make money off of giving out legal advice, and thus it would not be advisable for them to give out this advice for free. This would be the equivalent of a stock broker giving out trading secrets for free. It would simply make no sense, and in some cases lawyers would actually be barred from doing this.
The liability factor
The second reason why free legal advice is not often given out by lawyers is a possible liability issue. If the give you an opinion about what you should do in a particular situation and you hand out this information to someone else, then there could be issues. The lawyer does not want the person you pass the information on to to take this as your opinion about what they should do as well. Their case may be different from the one that you were in, and thus different legal options may be necessary.
